Welcome to the ramblings of a nutter..

Since March 2025, Tangled Lines has adapted from a questionably terrible idea, into what’s slowly adapting into a tremendous and unexpected adventure. Let me explain.

Driving home from Glasgow one glorious afternoon, I plugged my phone into the car speakers, and started listening to what I thought was going to be a glorious, queer love story. How wrong I was. Instead, I found myself driving over one hundred miles listening to something that made my skin crawl. The horrific Scottish accent and boring storyline angered me more with every passing road sign.

I could have stopped and changed the story, but in truth, I enjoyed the frustration burning in the pit of my stomach. The fact I had something to whinge about when I got home gave me a slight relief.

Eventually arriving at the house, I groaned as the wife needed us to go somewhere else.

Ahah! The perfect opportunity to explain how terrible the somewhat decent drive had been. Oh, and did I mention the audiobook that almost sent me crashing into the central reservation just to get away from the plot? You bet your backside I did.

Within five minutes, my hands were flippantly shaking the sky like a deranged dafty. My voice pitched so high, it was probably meeting the still quivering fingers, and in truth, my wife’s ears were probably bleeding.

She didn’t seem all that upset by my story. Instead, she laughed, slapped my leg, shook her head and turned to the coastline whizzing past her eyes.

WAIT. WHAT? I need attention! I need someone to verify that I’m not completely nuts. This story was bad. Terrible. The worst!! Was it though? Probably not! In time I’ve realised the problem was me. It just wasn’t the right story for me.

“That’s it. I’ve decided I’m going to write a book and it’s going to be f***ing fantastic. Just you wait. It’ll be queer, Scottish and magnificent.”

The eyes rolled as she turned to look at me again. “That’s just what to do babe. I’m sure it’ll be great.” Her head once again turned away.

RUDE!!

“Nah, I’m doing a full series. Just you wait…”

I knew in that moment I should have stopped. I should have shut up and continued driving. Had a laugh, a wee chuckle, a wee ‘could you imagine?’ But I couldn’t.

I knew I’d bitten off more than I could chew the moment I’d said it. My words were out in the open and there was absolutely no way on this planet I could back down now. If I did, it would just be another failed attempt at trying to still my frantic, probably attention deficient mind. She knew I’d get bored. Knew I’d start something else, find a hurdle and lay down. Another incomplete hobby.

Nah, not this time. This time, I’m going to do it. This time I’m going to finish what I’ve started. It’s happening, it has to happen. Sugar. What in the world do I do now??
